Rural development


The following provides information, links and contact details for a number of rural development schemes.

Not all schemes are listed here, and rural areas also qualify for a range of wider / general support schemes.

WLGA Rural Forum

The county council is a member of the Welsh Local Government Association (WLGA) Rural Forum for local authorities covering rural areas in Wales.

The forum considers and lobbies for policies to support the needs of rural Wales.

Menter Môn

Menter Môn was originally set up in 1995 to deliver innovative rural development projects on Anglesey.

It is now a not for profit social enterprise that delivers a wide range of projects and services across North Wales. Menter Môn seeks to add value to the region’s resources for the benefit of local inhabitants.

Among these are the natural and built environment, heritage, language, people and agricultural produce.

Rural Development Programme (RDP) for Wales

The EU Rural Development Programme which closes in 2023 has supported many rural projects on Anglesey.

Menter Môn has been the lead body for the Ynys Môn Rural Partnership / Local Action Group.

The Welsh Government aims to continue support for important actions previously funded under the rural development schemes

UK government support for rural areas

The UK government is also involved in supporting agriculture and rural communities.

The UK Community Renewal Fund and Shared Prosperity Fund resources allocated to Anglesey are supporting a range of projects across the island.

Support for farming and farm diversification

Various advice and support schemes are available through the Welsh Government’s Farming Connect scheme.

There is a Farming Connect Officer for Anglesey.

Farmers need to register to receive this support.

Smallholdings and agricultural land

Isle of Anglesey County Council owns and manages an estate of farms and farmland across the island.

Subject to availability, farm tenancies are offered to encourage entry to the local agricultural sector.

Welsh Government rural grants and payments

The Welsh Government has various financial support schemes relating to farming, food production, and woodland.

These can change over time.
