There is a warm welcome in Wales for everyone from Ukraine who is fleeing the war
We know people across Anglesey are eager to help the people of Ukraine.
Wales has signed up to the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme as a super-sponsor. This will make it easier for people from Ukraine who do not have any family ties in the UK or have an individual sponsor to seek safety in Wales, which is a Nation of Sanctuary. There is more information about all aspects of life in Wales on the Welsh Government’s Sanctuary website. This is available in Ukrainian and Russian.
People fleeing Ukraine who want to come to the UK, can choose to be sponsored for a visa by the Welsh Government. Once a visa is granted, people will be contacted directly by the Welsh Government’s contact centre to confirm arrangements for their arrival. They will need to make their own way to the UK. But once here, they will be eligible for free onward travel to Wales and to one of the welcome centres, which have been set up around the country to provide immediate accommodation and support for new arrivals from Ukraine.
In the welcome centres, everyone will receive help and support to settle into life in Wales. Translation services will be available for people who do not speak English and there will be opportunities to start learning English – and Welsh. Health services will be available; children will start lessons and there will be advice to help people find their way in a new country; help with money and welfare benefits and advice about finding work. Accommodation will be available on site at the welcome centres but the Welsh Government will work to find all individuals and families longer-term homes across Wales.
