A55 Britannia Bridge

Current status 

Bridge open to all vehicles apart from caravans, motorbikes and cyclists.

The bridge will reopen to all traffic at 8pm.

Traffic management will be removed from either side of the bridge from 11:59pm tonight (Friday 24 January). 

Diversion for caravans, motorbikes and cyclists

The A5 Menai Suspension Bridge is available as a diversion

We are advising all drivers to allow extra time for their journeys or to consider delaying travel until wind speeds have lowered.

Highways

Highways staff remain on standby and will be called into action as and when required.

Leisure centres 

Holyhead leisure centre

There is currently no change to the ongoing power outage on the local network.

Holyhead leisure centre remains closed. 

The swimming pool at Holyhead leisure centre will remain closed for the remainder of today (Friday, 24 January 2025). 

We are reviewing the situation regarding the dry side of the centre in case the power is restored. 

Recycling and black bin collections

Following a risk assessment undertaken by our providers, Biffa, a decision has been taken to suspend all waste collection services for Friday 24 January only. 

We would kindly ask that all affected properties not to present their bins for collection. 

Alternative arrangements 

Recycling

We will be returning on your next scheduled collection day.

Clear plastic bags will be made available at our recycling sites in Gwalchmai and Penhesgyn from Monday 27 January, along with the Council Offices in Llangefni. The council is also exploring additional collection points within the affected areas.

Black bin

We ask that all properties affected to present their black bin on Saturday 25 January for 7am and we will aim to collect them. This however may be subject to change. 

Penhesgyn and Gwalchmai household waste recycling centres

Penhesgyn

Penhesgyn will be open Saturday 25 January between 10am and  4:30pm.

Gwalchmai

Gwalchmai Recycling Centre will reopen on Sunday 26 January. 

Clear bags

For those households that didn’t receive their recycling collection due to the storm (Friday 25 January), clear bags will be available to collect at both Penhesgyn and Gwalchmai.

Roads

Road closures:

  • Lon Ceunant, Llangefni. Dangerous over hanging branch means that the road will have to be closed.
  • A tree has fallen blocking the road at Yr Ogof, Mynydd Mechell, LL680TE.

Passable with care:

  • Lon Clai Rhosmeirch. Tree fallen on the road.
  • B5109 road Beaumaris to Llansadwrn partially blocked due to fallen tree.

We are setting up traffic light to safeguard road users.

Schools

All Anglesey schools have decided to close their school building to learners.

Schools will continue with distance learning (Friday, 24 January).

Beaumaris Pier

Due to Storm Éowyn, Beaumaris pier will be closed (Friday, 24 January).
