Isle of Anglesey County Council today (Thursday, August 22) confirmed the appointment of its new Chief Executive, Annwen Morgan.
Annwen, who is currently employed as the authority’s Deputy Chief Executive, will take up her new post in October.
Annwen Morgan said, “I’m delighted and honoured to be appointed to the role of Anglesey Chief Executive. I look forward on building on the excellent work of my predecessor, Dr Gwynne Jones, and continuing to work with colleagues and partners in local communities and across all sectors of society to deliver for Ynys Môn.”
She added, “Local government faces significant challenges in terms of future finances, but I’m eager to begin the work and do my utmost for the people of Anglesey.”
A native of Anglesey, Annwen was educated at Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones, Amlwch. She gained her BA in Welsh from Bangor University, followed by a Postgraduate Certificate in Education qualification.
Annwen began her career with the Isle of Anglesey County Council in 1983 as a Welsh teacher at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern, becoming the Head of the Welsh Language Department in 1994 and the school’s Head Teacher in 2007. In January 2016 Annwen was appointed as the County Council’s Assistant Chief Executive (Partnership and External Transformation).
During this time, Annwen has worked locally, regionally and nationally to progress and develop key partnerships across all Council services to deliver projects relating to economic regeneration, school modernisation, community safety and the transformation of adult social services as well as the broader partnerships such as GwE and regional service initiatives. Annwen has also led strategically on the Welsh Language Strategy within the Council to promote its use within the Council's internal administration.
Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi, warmly welcomed the appointment, adding, “I would like to congratulate Annwen on her appointment as our new Chief Executive and look forward to working with her.”
“Our Council Plan 2017-22 includes many ambitious and important targets as we look to support individuals, families and local communities. At its core, is our desire to create the right conditions for everyone to fulfil their long-term potential; to support the vulnerable and keep them safe and healthy; and work in partnership with communities to ensure that they can meet future challenges.”
“As Anglesey’s Chief Executive, Annwen will play a vital role in our improvement journey and driving forward positive change to create a healthy, thriving and prosperous Anglesey. She will also provide the vital bond that is needed between staff and elected members, at the County Council, as we work together to provide residents with the best possible services, despite our severely diminishing budgets.”
Annwen currently lives in Llangefni. She is married to Tudur and has two grown-up daughters.
