Anglesey Council turns empty properties into new homes

Anglesey’s Housing Service has taken possession of two new housing developments after work was recently completed earlier this month.

Empty properties in Holyhead, including an old snooker hall, have been converted into 2x two bedroom houses and 10x one bedroom flats, as part of the Affordable Housing Grant scheme.

The new homes on Vulcan Street, Seiriol Street and Longford Road will provide essential housing where local demand is high. All of the homes will be let to applicants on the Housing Services’ waiting list, who have a connection to the island.

The two developments were built by local contractors, BC Services (Anglesey) Ltd. from Caergeiliog, and Gareth Morris Construction of Llangollen.  The contractors made a significant contribution towards the Island Food Bank fund during the Covid-19 period, and outdoor play equipment to Ysgol Cybi, too.

The sites were closed down for a short time due to Covid-19, but the work was completed by following appropriate safe working guidelines.

Head of Housing Services, Ned Michael, said, “We are very pleased to have been able to complete the recent developments to such a high and modern standard throughout. Bringing empty properties back into use creates secure homes for those who desperately need them. Welsh Government have contributed 58% towards the cost of the two developments, and we thank them for their continued support”.

Cllr Alun Mummery, Portfolio Holder for Community Housing added, “Empty properties have such a negative impact on the community, so it’s great to see these properties have been converted into homes for local residents that are in needed of social housing. The homes have a modern finish throughout”.

Gwenda Owen, Empty Homes Officer said "This is an excellent example of how initiating constructive discussions with the owners of empty homes can lead to a positive response to dealing with a problematic site. We are always in search of empty properties to give a new lease of life, and we would like to work with you to bring your empty property back into use”.
