An art work by Edrica Huws has been gifted by the family to Oriel Môn and can be seen in the exhibition celebrating 30 years of public collecting on Anglesey.
Edrica Huws (1907 to 1999) was an artist who used textiles to create her artworks. Edrica and her husband Richard Huws who was also an artist lived in London before moving to Talwrn to raise her family.
She later lived in Llanrwst, Liverpool, Oxford and Paris. Edrica Huws trained as an artist at the Chelsea School of Art and the Royal College of Art. She had a vision for what she wanted to create – art works using patchwork – she even found her own technique. While busy raising a family she did not create the large textile works – instead she wrote poetry and set about collecting pieces of fabric that would be put to good use in future years. Once she had the space and time to do so, Edrica Huws could create her original and striking patchwork paintings. She exhibited in France and in Japan when she was in her 70s and 80s. ‘The Fall in Connecticut’ relates to a trip she made to see her friend and was her first transatlantic flight. The work was also one of Edrica’s favourites, according to her family.
Edrica Huws’ family have worked hard to ensure that her work is given the public recognition it deserves; organising an art exhibition on Anglesey in 2007. Her son, Daniel Huws and other family members published books illustrating her works (now out of print) and her prints and cards have been used to raise funds for the National Eisteddfod on Anglesey in 2017.
Esther Roberts, Oriel Môn Senior Manager explains “‘The Fall in Connecticut’ by Edrica Huws is the first example of the artist’s work in the collection. We have wanted an example of her work for the public collection here at Oriel Môn for many years. Daniel Huws’ generous gift has made it possible. The piece is in excellent condition and has been able to be on display to the public immediately where it will be on display until October. The work will then be cared for, digitised and available to see on our own and the ArtUK website. We would like to thank Daniel Huws and the family for the generosity to Oriel Môn and in turn the people and visitors to Anglesey."
Daniel Huws commented; “There comes a time when one should consider contibuting to public art collections so that as many people, especially young people can enjoy and be inspired by them. I’m really pleased to be able to support the special work of Oriel Môn and to see Edrica Huws’ work in the collection. It is wonderful to see the art as part of the exhibition to celebrate 30 years of public collecting at Oriel Môn”.
‘The Fall in Connecticut’ is part of the exhibition ‘Your Collection – celebrating 30 years of art at Anglesey' which is free to visit until 3 October 2021.
