Isle of Anglesey County Council

Final stage of Anglesey’s Active Travel Network Map consultation now open

The final stage of Anglesey’s Active Travel Network Map consultation process, which is the statutory phase, is now open.

Active Travel means walking and cycling (including electric wheelchairs and mobility scooters) for everyday short-distance journeys, such as journeys to school, work, or for access to shops, services and bus/rail stations. Active travel does not include journeys made purely for recreation or social reasons.

Every three years Local Authorities consult on the Active Travel Network Map and a revised version must be submitted to the Welsh Government for approval (by no later than 31 December 2021).

Isle of Anglesey County Council would like to hear your views on walking and cycling routes on the Island as part of the consultation process.

An online tool called ‘CommonPlace’ is being used to gather residents’ feedback on existing journeys and to help identify potential new routes. Please visit our consultation page for further information.

Anglesey’s Head of Service Highways, Waste and Property, Huw Percy, said, “During 2021, we have sought your views on how cycling and walking provision on the Island could be improved. We have carefully considered all the comments in combination with other relevant information to produce a revised draft of the Active Travel Network Map (ATNM).

“The ATNM will be the tool that will then be used to apply for funding from Welsh Government to implement plans for future improvements to the walking and cycling network.

“It is important that we understand what matters to local residents when it comes to walking and cycling routes and we’d therefore encourage you to share your thoughts on the routes that we have proposed to cater for everyone in the community.”

Earlier this year, the County Council asked the public what prevented them from walking and cycling on day-to-day journeys and what improvements could be made to local routes. These views were captured to develop the initial ATNM which was consulted upon during the Summer. This is now the statutory consultation to obtain feedback to finalise the ATNM.

The final stage of the Anglesey’s Active Travel Network Map consultation process, which is the statutory phase, closes on Tuesday 30 November.

Highways portfolio holder, Councillor Bob Parry, welcomes the views of the public during the consultation to help develop future routes.

He added, “The public engagement on the Active Travel consultation has been very successful. I would like to thank all residents who have participated to date during the previous two stages of the consultation process. More than 1000 people have already contributed. This is now the final opportunity for people to contribute and we are eager to receive further views from the public to help develop more cycling and walking opportunities for everyday journeys here on Anglesey.”

Ends 16 September 2021
