More open days to encourage over 50s to get active are being planned after initial events proved a success.
Last week saw the third in a series of open days held at Holyhead Leisure Centre.
Organised in partnership between the council’s leisure service, Môn Actif, and the adult services, the event followed two previous open days at the Amlwch and Beaumaris Leisure Centres.
The Holyhead open day provided participants with the opportunity to take part in a range of free leisure activities, including:
• pickleball
• walking netball
• group exercises
• arts and crafts
Partner organisations including Medrwn Môn, Re-engage, Carers Outreach Service, Tai Môn and Anglesey Library Service also attended to provide those taking part with information about local services and opportunities within their communities.
NHS Wales were also present at the event, providing individuals with the opportunity to receive their flu jabs.
The event received a very positive response from participants with many voicing their appreciation for the range of activities available and the information that was on hand.
Anglesey Council’s Age Friendly Communities Development Officer, Sioned Young explained, “We are committed to creating an Age Friendly Anglesey which includes promoting a healthy and prosperous life to all residents on the island. Working in collaboration with Môn Actif, we have been able to arrange a series of 50+ open days at local leisure centres, ensuring an equal opportunity to all residents.
She added, “Participation feedback from these types of events has been overwhelmingly positive and we look forward to hosting more soon.”
Adult services portfolio holder, Councillor Alun Roberts, said “We are delighted to be able to offer these opportunities to Anglesey residents. These open days highlight the inclusive range of activities that are available.”
He added, “These events are aligned with many of our Age Friendly Communities priorities which include; increasing opportunities to stay healthy and active, providing information and support to local communities.”
The next 50+ event will be held at Plas Arthur Leisure Centre, Llangefni on 21 March.
