Isle of Anglesey County Council

Help reduce fly-tipping on Anglesey this Christmas

More than 3,700 fly-tipping incidents have been reported and cleared up on Anglesey in 2023.

Items left have included chemical drums, white goods, construction waste, animal carcasses and many more. Nearly 75% of all incidents were located in the Holyhead area.

With dedicated crews needed to collect every piece of fly-tipping waste dumped across the island. This now represents a significant cost to the county council. A reduction in fly-tipping would result in scare resources being put to better use in other waste-related areas.

With one third of Anglesey classed as an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), fly-tipping also takes a toll on our environment. It can have a serious detrimental effect on local wildlife as well as, in some instances, creating a public health risk.

The county council will use all available resources to take appropriate action against individuals that fly-tip on the Island. Those found guilty can face unlimited fines and a prison sentence.

Members of the public can dispose of waste free of charge at Gwalchmai and Penhesgyn recycling centres. The county council also offer a bulky waste collection service for up to four large items for a fee of £55.

If you are disposing of your waste through a private company, it is your responsibility to ensure they are licensed with Natural Resources Wales, or you could be fined £400 if your waste ends up being fly-tipped.

Chief Waste Management Officer, Meirion Edwards, said, “Litter and fly-tipping has a detrimental effect on our local environmental and it is unacceptable. Not only does fly-tipping create an eyesore for residents; it is also a serious public health risk, creating pollution and attracting rats and other vermin. The council will take appropriate action against those found to be responsible.”

He added, “As the festive period approaches, we are asking residents to ensure all of their waste is disposed of correctly and responsibly.”

Anglesey’s Highways, Waste and Property Portfolio Holder, Councillor Dafydd Rhys Thomas, said, “At a time when councils face difficult choices about services in light of reducing budgets, we are having to spend a significant amount each year on tackling littering and fly-tipping. This is money that could be better spent on other waste services.”

“We’re urging those who may be tempted to fly-tip to please use either the Gwalchmai or Penhesgyn recyling centres or use the council’s bulky waste service.”
