Major New Exhibition Opens at Oriel Môn

Oriel Môn will be opening its gallery doors on the long-awaited exhibition ‘Home and Back Again’ by Daniel James Yeomans RCA, on Saturday 5th August.

Daniel is a young emerging contemporary artist who has become known for outstanding mastery of his craft in painting. Over the years he has gradually developed a style applying contemporary twists to classic techniques.

Since 2022, Daniel begun sculpting to express some creative ideas that he felt suited a 3D medium and more immersive viewing experience.

Aged 25, Daniel went to Italy and trained as a portrait painter at Charles H. Cecil studios in Florence, where he remained for a few years, after which he returned to Montgomery, Wales where he began to paint full time. Daniel stayed there, working in a renovated barn studio on the family property. During this time Daniel completed many portrait commissions including one of the Viscount Clive of Powys, Jonathan Herbert, and of Lord William and Ffion Hague.

After four years living at the family home and having a long-distance relationship with his Swiss partner Alicia, he decided to move to Geneva where they now live together.

Daniel’s connection to Wales remains strong and he continues to exhibit here on a regular basis. In 2021 he was made a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy (RCA) in Conwy where he is currently exhibiting in their ‘2023 members summer show (15/07/23 – 09/09/23)’.

In 2019 his self-portrait N0.3 was purchased and added to the public collection of the National Library of Wales. His Portrait of Tim ‘Dystonia & I; The Renaissance of Self’ was also selected for the Jackson’s Award.

‘Home and Back Again’ is Daniel’s largest solo show to date, bringing together works devoted to a shift in his project styles, ideas, and mediums. The show opens with a full-scale self-portrait reflecting the creative struggles faced through the Covid pandemic. This striking piece is displayed alongside various sculpture and mixed media works, which invite viewers to reflect on themes such as the Ukraine war, and how technology changes our everyday human interactions. In addition, the exhibition features many of Daniel’s luminous, ‘plein-air’ paintings from Anglesey.

Daniel explained, “For this show I’ve started exploring outside the realm of classical painting. I’m really interested in how we interact with an artwork and how space and different mediums be used to influence our experience and reflections. Inevitably it’s about manipulating my works, inviting people to take a second look.”

‘Home and Back Again’ can be viewed at Oriel Mon until the 17th of September. The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00am to 5.00pm, and admission is free. For further information please contact, 01248 724444 / www.orielmon.org
