National Safeguarding Week 2019 – It’s everyone’s responsibility

National Safeguarding Week is set to return 11th – 15th November, with North Wales aiming to reinforce the message that ‘safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility’.

The North Wales Safeguarding Board works towards preventing all types of abuse, neglect, sexual and financial exploitation of the young or old alike wherever it happens.

As a Board member, the Isle of Anglesey County Council is supporting the week with a number of key events, and spreading the word amongst its own staff and councillors to make sure everyone can spot any potential safeguarding issues, and report a concern.

A number of Council services will also be promoting these safeguarding issues, including Social Services, Leisure, Housing and Highways. They’ll be working with a number of partner agencies, including North Wales Police, to raise awareness of the range of issues facing both adults and children at risk.

Outreach support sessions will be held on Thursday, November 14th in the Holyhead, Amlwch, Menai Bridge, and Llangefni communities. Members of the public are invited to various venues between 1pm and 3pm for an informal chat about safeguarding issues.

  • Holyhead - Library, Market Hall
  • Menai Bridge - Library
  • Llangefni - Ger y Graig communal lounge
  • Amlwch Memorial Hall

Director of Social Services, Alwyn Jones, said, “National Safeguarding Week is so important. We all have a role to play in ensuring everyone in the community is safe. I would urge anybody who is worried about the safety of a relation, friend, colleague or someone in their local community to contact the County Council or North Wales Police as soon as possible.”

Council Leader and Social Services portfolio holder, Councillor Llinos Medi, added, “Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility and everybody has a role to play in safeguarding. As a community we must work together to stop abuse and prevent it from happening – everyone has the right to live a life that is free from abuse, neglect or harm.”

She added, “As a Council, we are dedicated to ensuring that every child and family has easy access to relevant safeguarding information, advice and support as early as possible.”
