The development of two new small sided £330,000 state of the art multi-sport pitches at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern has been given the greenlight.
The new pitches will replace existing old sand based all-weather pitches at the secondary school which have come to the end of their lifespan. The project will be funded thanks to a £300,000 grant from Sports Wales Collaboration Fund and a £30,000 contribution by the County Council. Work is set to begin in the coming months and should be completed before the end of the summer.
The new development will include a 3G seven-a-side football pitch and a 2G pitch suitable for tennis and hockey.
Anglesey’s Leisure portfolio holder, Councillor Neville Evans, said, “This will be the fifth 3G pitch on the Island following investment at David Hughes Leisure Centre, Holyhead Park, Plas Arthur Leisure Centre and Amlwch Leisure Centre. This clearly highlights our commitment to ensuring that high quality facilities are available for residents across Anglesey.”
He added, “I would like to thank Sports Wales for recognising the importance of this project and for this significant grant funding. I would also like to thank our Officers for their hard work in preparing and presenting the successful grant application.” Paul Matthews-Jones, headteacher at Ysgol Uwchradd Bodedern said, “The new pitches will give our pupils access to high-quality sports and training area all-year round, helping to promote physical well-being.”
He added, “This project underlines our continued commitment to providing local children with the facilities they need to grow their skills and to enjoy physical exercise. It will also provide local residents with more opportunities to get involved in sports and physical activity outside of school hours.” As with other 3G pitches on the Island, the facility will be made available to the local secondary school during the day and for community use in the evenings and on weekends. It is also hoped that funding can be secured to include floodlights in the future to ensure local clubs and groups have use during the winter.
News that works on the new project is to begin has been welcomed by the Bro’r Llynnoedd ward’s county councillors, Cllrs Gwilym O. Jones and Ken Taylor.
They said, “We are pleased, as local members, to see this investment in Bodedern. The new pitches will provide an important community resource for both the school pupils and local community. We hope to see it benefit both junior and senior sporting teams; and provide a quality facility for all to enjoy.”
