Visitors to David Hughes Leisure Centre can now use new state-of-the-art equipment whilst enjoying one of the best views any gym has to offer!
The fitness room has just reopened after a £115,000 upgrade, thanks to capital funding from the county council.
Views of the Menai Strait, Britannia Bridge and Snowdonia are, of course, breath-taking enough in their own right – but even more so with the added attraction of new treadmills and exercise bikes!
The new fitness room, operated by Môn Actif (the county council’s leisure service), showcases the very latest ‘TechnoGym’ fitness equipment, including:
- new modern cardio equipment such as rowers, treadmills, and bikes
- new strength machines and weightlifting platform
- new range of dumbbells ranging from 4kg to 40kg
- inclusive fitness room that is accessible to all
The new look fitness room reopened earlier this week and is now open to new and existing members. Ysgol David Hughes pupils are also able to benefit from the improved facilities as the school use it daily as part of their P.E lessons.
Welcoming the upgrade, Anglesey’s deputy leader and economic development portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, said, “Our aim is to provide state of the art facilities like these on Anglesey to inspire and enable residents of all ages and abilities to be happy and healthy. The well-being of our residents remains a top priority in our work.”
He added: “Despite finances in local government remaining tight, we see our leisure centres as a vital community resource and recognise the importance of investing in them.”
Councillor Jones also noted the unique location of the fitness room, stating: “The gym is situated right along the Menai Strait. I really don’t think there’s any view better in the whole of the UK whilst exercising than at the newly upgraded fitness centre at Ysgol David Hughes.”
The investment at Ysgol David Hughes forms a part of a rolling programme of work which saw substantial improvements to the fitness rooms at Holyhead Leisure Centre (in 2018); Plas Arthur Leisure Centre (in 2020) and Amlwch Leisure Centre (2021).
Anglesey’s commercial leisure manager, Gerallt Roberts, said, “This major investment will help secure the fitness room’s long-term future, as well as attracting new members and customers to use the facilities. New TechnoGym fitness machines and equipment, as well as new flooring and decoration have all been included in the project.”
News of the investment in the new fitness room has been welcomed by the Aethwy ward’s county councillors, Councillors Dyfed Jones, Alun Mummery and Robin Williams.
