New moorings planned for Amlwch Port

Work to replace old moorings at Amlwch Port will be given priority to support local fishermen and charter boat owners.

Concerns about the condition of nine mooring piles in the outer harbour (locally known as the “Shell Penns”) were raised earlier this year.

Until very recently, Covid-19 restrictions had prevented the diving operations needed to assess the condition of the moorings. However, a full underwater survey has now been completed by Liverpool-based Salvesen (UK) Ltd.

Council Maritime Officers have received confirmation that the moorings will need to be replaced and are now awaiting an estimate for the cost of the works. Local stakeholders have also been updated in recent days.

Maritime portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones, thanked the local fishing fleet and charter boat operators for their patience and continued support.

Cllr Jones said, “Providing a safe operating environment for our commercial operators and fishermen at Amlwch Port is key.”

“Replacing these moorings is essential and will be given priority despite the financial challenges faced by the County Council.

“Once we have the estimated costs, we’ll look to complete these works as soon as possible.”
