Works to re-develop the site of a former heliport into a modern 23-unit business park are progressing well.
The construction of seven new business units at Holyhead Penrhos Industrial Estate began earlier this month. The seven new units should be available to let from December 2022, with another six business units set to be completed by mid-2023.
These units will form the second and third phase of development at the Penrhos site. It has been funded via a joint venture between the Welsh Government and Anglesey Council, with funding also received from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
In 2019, Anglesey County Council successfully applied for £2.3m from the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government and, in a first for Anglesey, agreed an innovative joint venture – worth £1.6m - with the Welsh Government for the new development on Holyhead’s Penrhos Industrial Estate.
The initial ten business units were completed in 2020 and have since been fully occupied by local expanding businesses and organisations.
Earlier this week, a visit from Deputy Leader and Economic Development Portfolio Holder, Cllr Carwyn Jones, and Climate Change Portfolio Holder, Cllr Nicola Roberts, marked the start of the second phase and further funding for the third phase.
Cllr Carwyn Jones said, “Building more high-quality business units on the Island underlines our continued commitment to improve Anglesey’s economic infrastructure. It also ensures that we provide local businesses with the best possible opportunity to thrive.”
“This development will help provide local businesses with the opportunity to develop and expand. Vitally, it will also help boost the local supply chain and create good quality jobs on the Island.”
The new business units will have PV panels installed to produce electricity directly from sunlight, electric vehicle (EV) charging points and bike storage will also be installed to promote sustainable transport.
Cllr Nicola Roberts added, “The installation of PV panels and EV charging points at the new business units will make help make a positive contribution to the environment; in line with the Council’s Towards Net Zero Plan 2022-2025.”
When the third phase of the former heliport site re-development is complete, Penrhos Industrial Estate will offer a total of 23 modern business units. These will provide businesses with office space, light industrial and storage use to enable growth which will provide more employment opportunities within Anglesey’s enterprise zones.
To date, Anglesey Council has secured a total of £9.3m investment utilising EU funds and agreed an innovative joint venture with Welsh Government to bring the project to fruition.
Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething said “I’m delighted to see the expansion of Holyhead Penrhos Industrial Estate. Thanks to Anglesey Council and the Welsh Government working in partnership, we’re able to upgrade Holyhead’s business infrastructure. I look forward to seeing more businesses moving in and continuing our record of success.”
