Rehau closure – devastating blow for Amlwch

News that the Rehau plastics plant will close before the end of the year is a ‘devastating blow for Amlwch’, says Council Leader, Councillor Llinos Medi.

The loss of more than 100 jobs will have a huge impact on the local community and the north Anglesey - an area that has already lost many of its major employers.

Rehau UK revealed in January that all 104 staff were at risk of redundancy because of a decline in export demand for its PVC products. Yesterday (Tuesday, April 23rd), the company confirmed that alternative proposals put forward by employees would not save the plant.

Cllr Llinos Medi said, “This is a devastating blow for the loyal Rehau workforce, their families, the Amlwch community and surrounding areas. Rehau has been a good, and major, employer in the town for decades – and so our immediate concern will be for the future of those employees and the families directly impacted.”

“The Task Force set-up after possible closure was first announced will continue to make sure all available support for employees is co-ordinated effectively.”

She added, “This announcement, coupled with the recent Wylfa Newydd suspension places the immediate future for Amlwch and North Anglesey in an uncertain and fragile position.”

“Whilst we will continue to work with all partners to provide as much support as possible, I would now urge both Welsh and UK Governments to take the necessary decisive action to deliver new investment and job creation to secure the immediate and long term future of Amlwch and North Anglesey.”

The County Council’s North Anglesey Regeneration Plan, which is currently out for consultation, can provide the basis for a targeted approach. The County Council will also be pursuing additional funding support to deliver and implement the Plan, which could have a positive impact across many sectors.

If Rehau’s decision is final, then the future of the site should also be considered. It represents an important economic resource, which could provide the basis for future job opportunities, and must not remain vacant for long.

Major Projects and Economic Development portfolio holder, Councillor Carwyn Jones said, “I am shocked and saddened at the confirmation from Rehau management and the extent of job losses at the plant. The news comes at a very uncertain time for those working and living in North Anglesey. Rehau must now continue to engage fully with stakeholders and partners to try to cushion the blow for staff.”

He added, “It is also vital that we receive a clear commitment from the UK Government that it wants to deliver the Wylfa Newydd project which will help mitigate and off-set these job losses.”
