Waste management expands electric vehicle fleet in net zero bid

Anglesey Council recently received delivery of two brand new Firstgreen Industries Elise 900 electric skid-steer loaders.

The world’s first full production electric skid-steer loaders have replaced the councils ageing diesel operated skid-steers.

The new vehicles are capable of operating for over eight hours on a single charge, can lift a load of 1200kg (up to 3.6metres in distance) and can carry up to 175kg with the loader arm lowered.

Principal Waste Management Officer at Penhesgyn Recycling Centre, Bob Parry said, “I first witnessed these machines in use in early 2022. Following several on-site demonstrations and evaluations, the decision was made to proceed with the impressive Elise 900 electric skid-steer loaders. The green potential of these electric vehicles is evident, it also highlights the Council’s commitment to reduce its carbon emissions.”

Both vehicles have been specified with extended life batteries, solid tyres, and a full guard pack making them suitable for working in the waste recycling centres.

The county council also aim to introduce solar panels at both of their recycling centres to allow for a completely renewable energy source.

Anglesey’s Highways, Property and Waste portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Rhys Thomas explained, “Replacing our current diesel vehicles with electric alternatives is an essential step in reaching net zero status. This will help us in our overall aim to reduce CO₂ emissions and reduce running costs.”

The new vehicles supports the council’s bid to become a net zero organisation by 2030. Councillor Nicola Roberts who has responsibility for climate change as part of her portfolio added: “Our corporate waste management fleet already has a number of electric vehicles that offers many advantages for a cleaner and quieter environment. We are fully committed to achieving net zero carbon status by 2030 and these new vehicles will support us to achieve this.”
