Oriel Môn will be welcoming Artist, Art Historian and Curator, Dr Ceri Thomas to give a talk to about his current exhibition ‘Artists & Teachers’ in Oriel Kyffin Williams.
This inspiring exhibition celebrates 70 years of Ysgol Gyfun Llangefni, by showing the work of three of its most prominent art teachers: Harry Hughes Williams, Ernest Zobole and Gwilym Prichard.
Ceri is a free-lance artist, art historian and curator. He has exhibited in Wales and abroad and is a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy of Art. He has published numerous books and articles on Welsh art since the 1920’s, including monographs on Ernest Zobole (Seren, 2007) and Ogwyn Davies (Y Lolfa, 2022).
He has curated solo and group shows, such as ‘Shaping Wales: David Bell and Kathleen Armistead’ at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea. He has also spoken at the Hay Festival and appeared on BBC and Channel 5 television.
Ceri said, “Modern Wales has long considered all branches of education as a crucial form of emancipation, yet it is perhaps only relatively recently that the role played by art education has begun to be more fully appreciated. Relatively well-known and influential, twentieth-century trailblazers have included artists such as Kyffin Williams in the north and Ceri Richards in the south. However, many others contributed to the process of greater individual enlightenment and national fulfilment. Three such were Harry Hughes Williams, Ernest Zobole and Gwilym Prichard.”
Ian Jones, Collections Manager at Oriel Môn said, “We are delighted to welcome Ceri Thomas to the Oriel. The exhibition ‘Artists and Teachers’ had been extremely well received by our visitors, and we are looking forward to learning more about these significant artists and their association with art education in Llangefni.”
The talk will take place at Oriel Môn on Friday the 11th of August at 7.00pm, booking a place is essential, and the cost is £5.00. To secure your place, please contact Oriel Môn on 01248 724444. The exhibition ‘Artists and Teachers’ is on show until the 28th of August.
The Oriel is open from Tuesday to Sunday, 10.00am to 5.00pm and admission is free.
