A orienteering pilot project recently gave primary school pupils the opportunity to develop new skills and to promote their physical well-being.
The pilot delivered at the Carreglwyd Estate, Llanfaethlu was organised by the Môn Actif Sport Development Team in partnership with the Education Visits Advisor for Anglesey, Arwel Elias.
Pupils from years 5 and 6 at Ysgol Gynradd Amlwch were put to the test in a two day challenge which saw them navigate various orienteering courses and develop their problem solving and communication skills. All Coronavirus guidelines were followed during the two day pilot project.
Sport Development Officer, Barry Edwards, explained, “The last 9 months has been extremely challenging but it was fantastic to be able to deliver this orienteering pilot to pupils from Ysgol Gynradd Amlwch. I would like to thank Mr Tom Carpenter for allowing us to use the facilities at the stunning Carreglwyd Estate for the activities.”
He added, “The two day pilot was extremely successful and we will now use this as a base to offer other schools on Anglesey orienteering experiences in 2021. These types of activities are essential as it provides us with the opportunity to promote fitness, health and well-being to our young people on Anglesey.
Carole Richardson, Deputy Head Teacher at Ysgol Gynradd Amlwch said, “After careful planning and preparation it was fantastic to see the children being given the opportunity to participate in competitive and adventurous activities.”
She added, “We are extremely proud to be the first school to take part in the orienteering event at Carreglwyd, the pupils had so much fun following the trails on the private estate. Many thanks to the Môn Actif Team for organising and for providing such a fantastic opportunity for our pupils.”
